Lyne FC Cause Cup Final Upset
Lyne, April 28, 2008 - Lyne FC's Elite U14 squad upset the form books at the weekend by winning the Surrey Primary League Cup Final in a thrilling 2-0 encounter with Premier Division leaders AFC Wimbledon.
The final, staged at Ash United's ground, saw both teams battle hard from the opening whistle, displaying the commitment, skill and determination associated with all great cup ties. Chances were created at either end, but inspired defending ensured the game remained balanced. Even a midfield reorganization forced by injury to Lyne journeyman Luke Edgecombe failed to disrupt the challengers leaving the crowd satisfied with the 0-0 half-time result.
The second half proved the real test. Lyne's strikeforce of Ryan Byrne and Alex Johnson caused all sorts of problems to the Wimbledon back four as they were released constantly by midfield creativity from Ryan Ayres, Sanjay Makin, Bertie Dunsire and Ben Placito. The breakthrough finally came after 20 minutes following an opening created by Ben Placito that allowed Ryan Byrne to lose his markers and take his chance to open the scoring. AFC immediately stepped up the pace as they saw the Cup drifting away from them although they hadn't counted on Lyne's determination. Defenders Jack Barry, Jagroop Gill, Oliver Brown and Ali Franke all played the game of their lives, supported by the odd acrobatic from keeper Ryan O'Sullivan.
However, the best was saved for last. With 5 minutes to go and injuries mounting, Lyne were forced to retire Ryan Byrne due to cramp and send on Katoon ‘The Toon' Corbett, himself suffering from hamstring problems picked up earlier in the week. With almost his first touch of the ball, and incredibly having sprinted 40 yards into the Wimbledon box, Corbett latched onto the end of an Alex Johnson cross to seal victory for Lyne and send the supporters wild. Nigel Edgecombe, Elite coach, said of the victory "There's nothing that can compare to winning a cup final. I'm very proud of the boys for this achievement. They worked so hard and really deserved the victory. It's a great end to our season and a real boost for the entire club."
